Introduction
"Delicate" was made as a technical exercise. After years of not being able to draw with any real control because of tremors, I wanted to see if I could still do realistic work.
I had not made anything like this in over a decade. What started as a test turned into a full piece once I saw what was possible again.
I chose a Moth because of its texture and connection to transformation and fragility, but the real focus was on regaining precision and observational skill.
It felt like proof that I could still do the kind of detailed work I used to do before everything fell apart. When I finished it, I just sat there staring at my screen. For the first time in years, I knew my hands were coming back.
This piece sits between the heavy stippling of Digital Bath and the return to energetic linework in Connection. It was a quiet, but important, step in rebuilding my confidence and control.
Created as a realism study, Delicate became something much more personal.
Reflection
Finishing Delicate was one of those moments that hit harder than I expected. I just stared at the tablet for a while. It had been so long since I had been able to make something with this level of control and detail. I had shelved that part of myself for years because my hands would not cooperate. Every time I looked at my old art supplies, I was reminded of the artist I thought I'd lost.
It was not a dramatic breakthrough. It was more like something gently clicked back into place. I realized I could still do the kind of work I used to love, even if it looked different now. That realization mattered more than I thought it would at the time.
This piece showed me that technical skill was not gone forever. It was just waiting for me to come back to it when I was ready. That feeling of being capable again stayed with me as I kept moving forward. What started as a simple exercise became proof that recovery isn't only emotional. Sometimes it's physical. Sometimes it's learning to trust your own body again.
Looking back, this piece marked the beginning of something much bigger than a realism study. It was the moment I stopped wondering if I'd ever make art the way I wanted to again.
I realized I didn't have to become the artist I used to be.
I was becoming a different one.
